“Brokeback” as one word is a name referencing a gay movie Brokeback Mountain. “Broke back” as two words describes an injured spine. When “brokeback” is used to describe poorly drawn female characters, it puts an association with the LGBT movie and bad art.
Here’s an easy way to remember the difference. “Broke back” is broken up into two words.

Aaaaa I dunno. I got tired of guys having no idea why girls find female superhero’s costumes kinda sexist, so I, um, made this?
My main goals were: 1) Make it so the first thing you think of when you look at them is sex, whether you want to or not. 2) make it so that any male human who looks at this feels really uncomfortable. 3) make it funny, because, well, it’s kinda hilarious really.
Not trying to start a war here, just wanted to poke a bit of fun.

This 1980 trash film featured an early version of the Brokeback and starred former Playmate Dorothy Stratten, whose murder by her husband would eventually be turned into a film by the late Bob Fosse, Star 80. Eric Roberts played the deadly husband, and was creepy. Mariel Hemingway played Stratten.
